The Canadian authorities decided to temporarily remove part of the support staff from the country’s embassy in Kiev. This was announced on Sunday, January 30, in a statement by the Canadian Foreign Ministry.
“Canada has decided to temporarily recall non-essential Canadian employees [диппредставительства] and the remaining family members from the Canadian embassy in Ukraine,” the Foreign Ministry said, noting that the diplomatic mission in Kiev continues to work.
Diplomats must also be prepared to provide consular assistance to Canadian citizens as needed.
On January 25, Canada decided to recall children of embassy employees in Kiev under the age of 18 and accompanying family members amid “destabilizing activities” in and around Ukraine.
On the same day, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reported that the German authorities had notified the foreign ministry of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of their intention to evacuate part of the diplomatic corps and employees of the German embassy in Kiev.
On January 23, the US State Department ordered to begin the voluntary departure of part of the American diplomatic staff and members of the families of diplomats from the territory of Ukraine. In addition, the State Department issued an advisory advising US citizens not to travel to Russia due to “continued tensions” on the Russian-Ukrainian border.
The representative of the State Department pointed out that in the event of an escalation of tension in Ukraine, the United States authorities will not be able to take their citizens out of the country. As specified, Moscow “may create a false pretext for the invasion of Ukraine”, but “the intentions of the President of the Russian Federation remain unknown for sure.”
At the same time, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry called the decision of the State Department premature. According to the agency, in fact, there have been no fundamental changes in the security situation recently.
In recent weeks, the Western media have repeatedly appeared articles about the alleged possible Russian invasion of Ukraine. Against this background, American lawmakers are calling for tougher sanctions against Moscow. Russia has repeatedly rejected reports of an alleged possible invasion of Ukraine. Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergei Ryabkov noted that Moscow has no intentions to attack Ukraine and cannot be.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov pointed out that the actions of the United States and NATO lead to an escalation of tension in Ukraine. He pointed out that it “is carried out through information actions and concrete actions that the US and NATO are taking.” In his opinion, there are a lot of rumors and unreliable data about the situation in Ukraine and about the attack allegedly planned by Russia, which are “information hysteria”.
