“Entrepreneurs are generally more optimistic than the respective economic situation would suggest,” says Oberbank General Director Franz Gasselsberger in the 40th edition of the OÖN podcast “Money & Life” with economics department head Dietmar Mascher. And this year too, a survey by the bank among its corporate customers showed that 70 percent expect positive developments. “It is important that we break this negative spiral that we find ourselves in. At the same time, it can’t just be a matter of practical optimism,” says the manager, who has led the bank for 23 years.
Gasselsberger expects four interest rate cuts this year. However, it will take some time for these to take effect. It could still be that Europe could surprise positively this year. “For when the night is darkest, morning is not far away.”
In addition to the interest rate cuts, Gasselsberger believes it is possible that Germany will recover with an ambitious government program and that Europe will initiate a turnaround in bureaucracy. And if the conflict between Russia and Ukraine ends, that could provide enormous impetus for Europe.
