US, South Korea, Japan to discuss response to North Korean missile launches

The United States, together with South Korea and Japan, will discuss options for responding to missile launches by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). This was announced on Sunday, January 30, by the Permanent Representative of the United States to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, on the air of the ABC television channel.

“The United States has imposed unilateral sanctions on the DPRK in the past few weeks, and we have been promoting sanctions through the Security Council [ООН]. I will discuss with our colleagues from South Korea and Japan, who are also at risk due to what happened, other options. [на ракетные пуски]”, — said Thomas-Greenfield on the air of the ABC television channel.

Earlier in the day, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said the United States was ready to sit down at the negotiating table with Pyongyang in light of North Korea’s latest missile launches. The diplomat noted that the United States, along with diplomacy, will seek to ensure its “full military readiness” in the Korean region in response to the threat of missile launches from the DPRK.

On January 30, it became known that the maximum speed of a rocket launched on the same day from the DPRK was Mach 16. The South Korean military believes that North Korea launched the Hwaseong-12 medium-range missile, which was first presented at the parade on April 14, 2017. Its first launch was carried out on May 14 of the same year.

According to the South Korean Committee of Chiefs of Staff, the rocket was launched on January 30 at 7:52 (1:52 Moscow time) from the area of the village of Mupyeong-ri, Chagang Province, in the direction of the Sea of Japan. The information about the missile launch was confirmed by the Japanese Coast Guard.

Primhydromet clarified that the launch of the North Korean ballistic missile did not affect the background radiation in the Primorsky Territory. This launch of a North Korean missile was the seventh in a row since the beginning of the year. The last launch took place on January 27.

The United States suggested that the UN impose sanctions against Pyongyang for launching ballistic missiles, since each of them was a violation of UN Security Council resolutions.
