Drugs that reduce the production of stomach acid are called proton pump inhibitors. They are also popularly called “stomach protectors” because they quickly relieve heartburn and successfully protect the gastric mucosa. For a long time, these “acid blockers”, which are often prescribed together with painkillers, were considered to be well tolerated and harmless.
“Proton pump inhibitors are highly effective drugs that should be handled with care. However, they should only be used for acute problems if prescribed by a doctor,” says pharmacist Reinhard Schiemer from Laakirchen. Because it is known that people who regularly take proton pump inhibitors are more susceptible to fractures, pneumonia and intestinal infections. It could also increase food allergies. “Often, symptoms like heartburn go away if you drink less alcohol, eat less fat and avoid acidic foods,” says the pharmacist. For milder symptoms, good results can be achieved with antacids such as chewable tablets or gels. “With marshmallow or cheese poplar tea, which is drunk on an empty stomach, you can get the symptoms under control in a natural way.” (bar)
