OpenAI, the startup behind ChatGPT, presented an ambitious economic plan designed to strengthen US leadership in artificial intelligence (AI) and compete with China in this area.
Under the initiative called “Innovating for America” (Innovating for the US), the company seeks to promote investment in infrastructure and technological training in various regions of the country.
Strategic meetings and regional focus
The CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altmanwill lead meetings in Washington D.C. and in key states like Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Alabama. These meetings aim to gain political and public support for the construction of critical infrastructure, such as data centers and renewable energy sources necessary for the development of AI.
The proposal also includes the creation of “AI economic zones”focused on accelerating the granting of permits for projects such as solar, wind power plants and nuclear reactors. Additionally, OpenAI highlights the need for educational and research programs that foster the talent needed to maintain technological leadership.
AI as a national security priority
Chris Lehane, VP of Global Affairs at OpenAI, emphasized that the administration of donald trump has shown interest in positioning AI as a key tool for national security. According to Lehane, there is a recognition that “democratic AI”, promoted by companies like OpenAI, must prevail over systems developed by China.
In that sense, the OpenAI policy document highlights the importance of a “Pact for AI” between the United States and its international allies to finance joint infrastructure and technological education projects. This includes ensuring that democratic values are the foundation of global AI development.
Relationship with the Trump administration
OpenAI has adjusted its political strategy following the election of Trump, who has expressed his intention to review AI policies adopted by the previous administration. The startup has hired a lobbying company close to the president and made a donation of 1 million dollars to Trump’s inaugural fund. This change seeks to position itself favorably in the face of an administration that could prioritize internal economic growth and protectionist policies.
Global competition and critical moment
The OpenAI plan arises in a context where China It is advancing rapidly in the development of AI, with projects such as the DeepSeek chatbot. Lehane described this scenario as a “Sputnik moment”underscoring the urgency for the US to lead this technological race.
The company highlights that success in this area will depend on policies that allow collaboration between the public and private sectors, while guaranteeing an ethical and democratic approach to the development of AI.
OpenAI’s economic plan marks a significant step in its effort to establish the US as a global leader in artificial intelligence. While seeking support in Washington and key states, the company is betting on a vision of AI that combines technological innovation, economic growth and democratic values. However, the challenge will be to balance these objectives in an increasingly complex political and competitive environment.
