As part of the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the first exchange of hostages and prisoners took place on Sunday. Three Israeli hostages were handed over to their relatives by the radical Islamic group Hamas via the Red Cross. In return, Israel released the first 90 Palestinians from prison. “90 terrorists” were released from the Ofer military prison in the West Bank and a detention center in Jerusalem, the prison authority said in a statement. According to Hamas, the next hostage handover will take place next Saturday. In return, more Palestinian prisoners – including women and minors – are to be released from Israeli prisons.

The hostages released on Sunday were civilians Romi Gonen (24), Emily Damari (28) and Doron Steinbrecher (31). Television images showed the three women in a vehicle in Gaza being surrounded by a large crowd. Armed Hamas members accompanied them and pushed people back.
According to the Red Cross, the three civilians are in good condition. According to Israeli media, Emily Damari lost two fingers during the Hamas abduction. The young woman’s bandaged hand could also be seen in pictures from a joint video call between the 28-year-old and her mother and relatives.
