UN Security Council voted to hold a meeting on Ukraine

On January 31, the UN Security Council (SC) voted in favor of holding a US-initiated meeting on the situation in Ukraine.

10 countries spoke in favor of holding the meeting, Russia and China opposed it, three states abstained. Nine votes of support were needed to hold the meeting.

Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya urged his colleagues not to allow the Security Council rostrum to be used “for the implementation of the propaganda guidelines” of the West, as well as to “reaffirm commitment” to Resolution 2202, which is “the international legal basis for an internal Ukrainian settlement.” The American initiative, which provides for holding the current meeting of the UN Security Council, was described by the diplomat as “a provocative proposal.”

According to him, the United States is trying to mislead the world community about the true state of affairs around Ukraine, as well as the causes of the current global tension.

“The United States delegation, in an explanation to its proposal for the meeting convened today, indicated that it considers the deployment of Russian troops on Russian territory as a threat to international peace,” he said.

Nebenzia stressed that this is not only an unacceptable interference in the internal affairs of the state, but also an attempt to mislead the international community about the true state of affairs in the region.

“In fact, today we are offered to convene a meeting of the Security Council because of speculation and unfounded accusations, which we have repeatedly refuted,” the permanent representative of the Russian Federation noted.

He added that the panic around Ukraine is needed by those who promote the theme of the mythical threat from Russia. He recalled that President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky asked Western countries not to whip up groundless hysteria around the presence of Russian troops near the border, since all this hype harms the Ukrainian economy.

Nebenzya also recalled that the annual meeting of the UN Security Council on Ukraine is scheduled for February 17.

China’s Permanent Representative to the UN Zhang Jun said the time has come for “quiet” diplomacy, not “microphone” diplomacy and open confrontation.”

“We are against holding an open meeting. More diplomatic efforts need to be made. This is our position,” he said.

Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Nikolai Patrushev on January 30 called the statements of the US authorities about the alleged threat from Russia towards Ukraine as absurd. The West is pursuing “some selfish fabrications of its own,” Patrushev pointed out. At the same time, the Ukrainian side itself indicates the absence of a threat, he noted.

On January 14, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said that the United States had evidence that Russia was allegedly preparing a pretext for invading Ukraine. Kirby noted that it was about “a group of operatives who are preparing to conduct a false flag operation.”

In recent weeks, Western politicians and members of the media have been spreading numerous speculations about possible Russian aggression against Ukraine. The Russian side has repeatedly denied such statements. Moscow stressed that it had no plans to “invade” Ukraine. On January 10, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov noted that Moscow had no intentions to attack Ukraine and could not have it.
