“We can’t get down, help us,” they shouted from the hotel window. Flames could be seen behind them. Those standing below answered, some helplessly: “Where is the fire department?”
Images showed the roof and upper floors burning. A reporter from CNN Türk said that strong winds made the fire-fighting work more difficult. The emergency services continued to fight the flames in the morning. The cause of the fire was initially unclear and an investigation was launched. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his condolences to the victims on Platform X.
People wanted to save themselves with sheets
There are currently school holidays in Türkiye. The Kartalkaya ski resort in Bolu Province is popular with locals. According to the provincial governor Abdülaziz Aydin, 234 people stayed in the hotel. The fire broke out at 3:30 a.m. local time (1:30 a.m. CET) on the floor where there is also a restaurant.
