American billionaire George Soros called Chinese President Xi Jinping “the greatest threat facing society today.” On Monday, January 31, he said at the opening of the panel of the Hoover Institution.
According to him, Xi Jinping rules by intimidation, and no one dares to tell him what he does not want to hear.
Soros noted that China is facing an economic crisis centered on the real estate market, which has been the main driver of growth since Xi Jinping came to power in 2013.
The billionaire said that in September 2021, there were far more sellers than buyers, and property prices began to fall. Soros indicated that it remains to be seen how the authorities handle the crisis.
The American billionaire also highlighted a serious demographic problem in China. According to him, the birth rate in China is much lower than the published figures show. Experts estimate that the actual population is about 130 million below the official figure of 1.4 billion people. Soros believes that this could exacerbate the real estate crisis, lead to labor shortages, a fiscal burden and a slowdown in the economy.
In addition, Xi Jinping has faced serious problems with vaccines, Soros is sure. The drugs were developed to fight the Wuhan variant of the coronavirus, but the world is already fighting other variants, first with the Delta strain and now with Omicron, the billionaire noted. Soros suggests that Xi Jinping will not acknowledge the problem until he is re-elected for a third term.
Since the Winter Olympics are Xi Jinping’s prestigious project, the administration is doing everything possible to make it a success. Competitors are isolated from the local population, but Soros believes that after the event, citywide lockdowns are unlikely to work against Omicron.
Soros expressed hope that someone less repressive could replace Xi Jinping. According to him, this would eliminate the greatest threat society faces today.
In 2019, Soros called Xi Jinping the most dangerous opponent of “open societies”. According to him, China is the richest, most powerful and technologically advanced authoritarian regime in the world. Therefore, the leader of the PRC can be called a dangerous opponent of “open societies”, since he has the tools of control to gain advantages.
