Large trees for which their own root areas are created, oases to provide shade and two bands of sustainable, long-lasting granite paving on the east and west sides with a variety of possible uses: This is how the Viennese office 3:0 Landschaftsarchitektur wants to upgrade and redefine the main square. “We used Piazza Navona in Rome as a model for the main square,” said Oliver Gachowetz.
It is a coincidence that of the 34 anonymized projects submitted to the design competition, the one from 3:0 Landschaftsarchitektur was selected, said planning officer Dietmar Prammer (SP) when presenting the results. As is well known, we won the competition for the redesign of Martin-Luther-Platz 3-0.
After the decision on the winning project has been made, the plans will be finalized this year. The redesign measures are scheduled to start in 2026. Prammer and Climate City Councilor Eva Schobesberger (Greens) have not yet been able to provide any final information on how long this will take. In any case, six million euros are earmarked for this, although not yet budgeted.
“Historical moment”
The redesign, which was only made possible by the closure of the main square to through traffic, is described by those responsible as a “milestone” and “historic moment”. “You only get a chance like this to redesign it once,” said Prammer, but it was important to him that the main square, as the center of the city, remains usable for events and remains a lively center.
