When the fruit hill country nature park was founded in 2005, there were many supporters, but also some skeptics. For example, there was fear that farmers could be restricted in management. “Back then you just didn’t know exactly what will come to the region, what it means and what options it will offer,” says Rainer Silber, who has been the managing director of the Obst-Hügel-Land nature park since 2006. In any case, the nature park has become a success story in the past 20 years.
Preserve orchards
In addition to the imparting of nature and environmental protection issues, a core task is to maintain the special cultural landscape with its orchards, which are habitats for many animal and plant species. Since then, around 8,000 orchard trees have also been planted in the two nature park communities and “Samarein” thanks to funding and the lifespan of old trees has been extended by care cuts. The nature park also co-accompanies projects that increase value creation in the region, such as the Samarein press and juice community, where everyone can have their own fruit pressed.
