Hungary will not host additional US and NATO contingents

Hungary will not host military contingents of other NATO countries, since it is itself able to defend its territory – “there will be nothing beyond the scope of routine cooperation with the alliance”‎. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto stated this in an exclusive interview with Izvestia.

Earlier, the Daily Telegraph, citing sources, said that the UK and the US are considering sending 1,000 troops each to Romania, Bulgaria and Hungary.

“I don’t know about other Central European countries, but for Hungary this is not the case. Yes, NATO forces are present on our soil, but this is the Hungarian army. Yes, the Hungarian army is a division of the alliance, its army. And she is in proper shape to protect the country, according to the current situation. So we do not need external forces on our land, the minister stressed. “We made it very clear that we ourselves are able to protect our country, we are fine with that.”

The minister specified that Hungary, as a member of NATO, maintains cooperation with some other members of the alliance, including Great Britain and the United States. The country has an agreement on training missions, an agreement on mutual exchange within the framework of rotation. “But there will be nothing that goes beyond this normal, routine cooperation,” Peter Szijjarto clarified.
