Gewessler: ECJ lawsuit against EU taxonomy is being prepared

Climate Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) carries out her threat to sue. Austria will prepare legal steps in the next few weeks and wants to bring an action for annulment before the European Court of Justice, Gewessler said on Wednesday. Luxembourg joins the Austrian initiative.

“From a purely formal point of view, the act must come into force so that it can be legally fought,” said Gewessler. The EU Commission’s taxonomy decision is a “greenwashing program for nuclear energy and fossil natural gas,” said the climate minister.

Other representatives of Austrian politics had already reacted critically to the “green label” for nuclear power proposed by the EU Commission. “Nuclear power is neither “green” nor sustainable. I cannot understand the EU’s decision,” said Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) on Twitter on Wednesday.

Gewessler “has my full support in examining legal steps,” stressed the Chancellor. Austria continues to focus on the expansion of renewable energy sources. Finance Minister Magnus Brunner (ÖVP) accused the Brussels authorities on Wednesday of undermining their own efforts to protect the climate with their decision. There was also criticism from other parties and environmental organizations. The Austrian MEPs announced that they would like to lodge a joint objection in the European Parliament.
