At least 17 people died due to cocaine poisoning in Argentina

At least 17 people died and 50 were taken to hospital due to cocaine poisoning in three suburbs of the Argentine capital. This was reported on Wednesday, February 2, on the Todo Noticias TV channel, with reference to the Minister of Security of the Province of Buenos Aires, Sergio Berni.

According to him, 10 people have already been detained in the case.

As Bernie said, according to one version, drug dealers diluted cocaine with another substance. This led to the fact that the resulting mixture became more toxic.

According to preliminary data, all the victims purchased drugs from the same supplier.

Earlier, on January 20, the Dorogomilovsky Court of Moscow, on the basis of a jury verdict, sentenced four defendants in a high-profile criminal case on cocaine smuggling from Argentina to Russia to prison terms.

According to the verdict, the key defendant in the case, businessman Andrey Kovalchuk, was sentenced to 18 years in prison with a sentence in a strict regime colony and a fine of 1.8 million rubles, the press service of the court reported.

In 2018, the special services of Russia and Argentina intercepted suitcases with 389 kg of cocaine, which were stored on the territory of the Russian Embassy in Buenos Aires. Russian diplomats told the security forces about the find.

Vladimir Kalmykov, Ishtimir Khudzhamov and Ali Abyanov were arrested in Moscow. Andrei Kovalchuk was extradited from Germany.

According to the defendants, Kovalchuk “misled them” by offering to earn money. The businessman, as they said, presented himself first as an embassy worker, then as an employee of the special services. The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that he had never worked in the department or in Russian diplomatic missions abroad.
