Fire broke out in the basement of a block of flats for an unknown reason. Within a short time, the smoke had spread throughout the building. Some of the residents were able to escape.
“We had to get two people from the upper floors with the turntable ladder,” said Werner Michitsch, head of the Enns fire department. It was only later that firefighters noticed that the smoke was also entering the neighboring house. The basements are interconnected. The smoke is believed to have entered the apartment through the bathroom ventilation system.
More than 20 people were able to get themselves to safety. With four vehicles and an ambulance, the rescue service treated those affected, who were able to return to the building after almost half an hour. 24 firefighters were able to quickly bring the fire under control.
