A new report no longer classifies the adapted construction project on Heumarkt as a World Heritage site.
A World Heritage Impact Assessment prepared by the architect Michael Kloos came to the conclusion that the “Heumarkt Neu” project – unlike the original design – no longer poses a serious visual impairment. The report has now been sent by the responsible Ministry of Culture to UNESCO for assessment.
“living disk” instead of a tower
The reason for this is that the plan by architect Isay Weinfeld, which was chosen in the 2014 architectural competition, was changed significantly with a 74-metre-high high-rise tower. Now, next to the planned new building of the Hotel InterContinental, a “living space” with a height of 56.5 meters is to be built in place of the tower. According to the property developer Wertinvest, there are no sketches of the project yet.
“We want to be part of the solution with which Vienna’s World Heritage status can be preserved and are working on a possible project adaptation despite the ability to obtain approval,” said Daniela Enzi, Managing Director of Wertinvest yesterday.
