Linz gets a Käthe-Recheis-Weg

Now it is certain that the street names in Linz will be enriched by those of Käthe Recheis. This was decided by the city senate in yesterday’s session at the suggestion of the city archive. The 200 meter long path, named after the Upper Austrian author, can be found in Kleinmünchen – between Flötzerweg and Weißdornweg.

Mayor Klaus Luger (SP) is pleased with this decision for several reasons. On the one hand, because one more street in Linz is now named after a woman. On the other hand, because the “achievements of a cultural worker with a world reputation” would be appreciated.

Käthe Recheis (1928-2015), born in Engelhartszell, grew up in Hörsching and went to high school in Linz. The multiple award-winning author has written more than 60 books and more than 200 articles for readers.

The naming of a traffic area after her is one of 17 that have taken place during Luger’s tenure so far. Six of these are women and six are men. However, this tie does not apply to the entire Linz naming practice. As has been reported several times, there is a blatant imbalance in favor of men.

But not only the gender ratio is causing discussions here: In 2019, for example, a commission of historians headed by the director of the city archive, Walter Schuster, was set up to check whether the respective namesake is historically charged (with a view to National Socialism, racism, etc.) . The results should be available as early as 2021, but the corona crisis made research more difficult and delayed. Schuster now expects the investigation to be completed this year.
