Since the man did not return from his daily walk, nurses at the retirement home in Obernberg alerted the police around 4 p.m. on Thursday. The officers searched the usual route – without success. Then a big search operation was started 😀Three other police patrols with a helicopter and service dogs, the rescue dog brigade, a Red Cross search squadron with search dogs and around 40 men from the Obernberg, Reichersberg and Ried fire brigades went on the search. The fire brigade also used a drone with a thermal imaging camera.
Helpers and losers were stuck
The drone discovered a heat source in a dense wetland area around 8:40 p.m. A search party immediately went there, where they found the missing person and also a helper from the search party stuck in the mud, police reported on Thursday morning. Both had gotten so stuck in the damp ground that they could no longer move forward. The 82-year-old was already so severely hypothermic that he was no longer a clear source of heat for the thermal imaging camera, according to the police. He was rescued and taken to the Red Cross. He was then taken to Ried Hospital.
