Today the forest west of the AMAG industrial area in Ranshofen is used as a local recreation area, but between 1940 and 1951 as a landfill. These years, in which waste from the factory and presumably also from the surrounding settlements, have left their mark: in the so -called Lochnerfeld, on an area of around 6000 square meters, two types of pollutants were found. Around 70,000 cubic meters are contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAK) and chlorinated hydrocarbons (CKW). “The so -called PAK are pollutants that are rigid and do not hike. They also occur in fire residues. The CKW, on the other hand, are mobile pollutants and could drop deep. Gnjezda, consulate for technical environmental protection. The Lochnerfeld was classified as the old load of priority class two. Because the pollutants could just drop and thus also get into the groundwater, steps must be taken. The water has not yet been contaminated, studies have revealed a negligible amount of CKW. All investigations were carried out on behalf of the country, which was responsible for the Federal Environment Agency.
Several variants checked
The aluminum group now wants to take responsibility for the contaminated sites and quickly implement a renovation. “Our goal was always to use an effective method that is both ecologically and economically the best renovation solution and has the lowest possible effect on the environment,” emphasizes Bettina Gupfinger, the technical managing director of AMAG service. Several variants, including an evacuation, a clearing with cover or a solidification were checked. Ultimately, the renovation process was most convincing due to a soil vacuum. “This method is not new, but the AMAG is still in charge here, because this has been implemented for the first time since the amendment to the contaminating law renovation law,” says Christof Skala, project and management consultant from the engineering office for cultural technology and water management. In short: it is new for the authorities who have to apply a new law. When the official approval procedures have been completed, the renovation measures, i.e. the floor air vacuum, can begin. The project managers expect a start in 2026.
