One person is still missing, the Tyrol control center told the APA. Further information on the identity and nationality of the victims was not known for the time being. Two Swiss helicopters, an Austrian emergency doctor helicopter and a police helicopter flew to the scene.
In Tyrol there was an unusually large number of avalanches on Friday. By the early afternoon, the control center had counted 13 avalanches, most of which had not injured anyone. In Sölden am Rettenbachferner, however, an avalanche went from the open ski area onto a slope. Five winter sports enthusiasts were buried and recovered alive, according to the control center.
The head of the Sölden mountain railway, Jakob Falkner, told APA that the slab of snow had apparently been triggered by the winter sports enthusiasts themselves in the field. According to information from the cable car, there was no one else on the slope. However, this is not yet fully secured.
