It is a huge pool of three million old photos and negatives from more than 200 Upper Austrian communities, which the members of two cultural associations from Waizenkirchen and Neukirchen are guarding. Almost 600,000 recordings are now digitized and for all interested parties on the websites of nostalgingild.at Accessible free of charge. The photos come from the estates of photographers from Waizenkirchen and Gallspach, who were bought up, from hobby photographers and private individuals.
In the previous year, the entire estate of photographer Alois Humer from Lenzing was added. “These were 1.5 million negatives that we transported with three cars and two followers,” says the New Kirchner historian Thomas Scheuringer, chairman of the association “Culture and Art”. The business books were also taken. “This means that we know when and where the photos were taken and who the clients were,” explains Scheuringer.
So far, the focus has been on the districts of Grieskirchen, Schärding, Rohrbach and Eferding, and pictures have been scanned systematically since 2016. Around ten volunteers of the associations “Culture and Art” from Neukirchen and “Home and Culture Waizenkirchen” take care of it. Now the archive can gradually be supplemented with photo ducts from southern Upper Austria.
Everyday scenes and portraits
The pictures show life in Upper Austria in past times. Many pictures were created at public events such as Kirtagen or religious festivals such as primitive. Many everyday scenes are also documented, such as the less fun visit to the dentist or scenes that show the hard work in agriculture when there were no machines. There are also many portraits and recordings of private events in families, but also school and advertising photographs, postcards and documents.
