The woman from the Waldviertel said she was overwhelmed with the care of the dogs. When the pandemic began, she had less and less free time. “It all got out of hand,” said the geriatric nurse.
According to the criminal complaint, the Chihuahuas had too little food, too little water and hardly any exercise. “I didn’t think that the dogs would have so many offspring so quickly. I made this mistake, I stand by it and it will definitely never happen again,” said the 57-year-old.
An anonymous complaint to the district authority got the case rolling. The dogs were taken from the woman, and according to the official veterinarian, 47 puppies were born in the animal shelter.
The conditional sentence is final. The woman was sentenced to a conditional sentence of six months. The judge argued with the long period of crime. The animals were kept neither adequately nor species-appropriate for much longer than a year. This was also confirmed by the official veterinarian of the Gmünd district authority, who was invited as a witness on Friday. “Most of the animals were frightened or aggressive. There was feces and urine everywhere,” said the veterinarian in court.
