Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan noted the importance of resolving the Karabakh conflict and concluding a peace treaty at a video conference with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. This was announced on Friday, February 4, by the press service of the Armenian government.
“Prime Minister Pashinyan emphasized the need for a long-term settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict under the co-chairmanship of the OSCE Minsk Group and the conclusion of a peace agreement,” the message says.
The conference was mediated and attended by French President Emmanuel Macron and President of the European Council Charles Michel.
It is noted that the parties exchanged views on solving existing humanitarian problems, as well as on reducing tension on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.
On December 14, 2021, Pashinyan and Aliyev assured the EU of their commitment to the implementation of the agreements on Karabakh, reached with the mediation of Russia.
As Charles Michel noted, the resolution of key humanitarian issues, such as the release of detainees and the decision of the fate of the missing, is of decisive importance.
On November 26, 2021, trilateral talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin, Aliyev and Pashinyan were held in Sochi. Following the meeting, a joint statement was issued. It states that the parties agreed to take steps to increase the level of stability and security on the Azerbaijani-Armenian border.
Armenia and Azerbaijan have disputed ownership of Nagorno-Karabakh since 1988. Then the region, which is inhabited mainly by Armenians, announced its withdrawal from the Azerbaijan SSR. During the military conflict of 1992-1994, Baku lost control over Karabakh. In September 2020, Baku took control of a number of settlements during military operations.
In November 2020, Armenia and Azerbaijan, with the participation of Russia, signed an agreement on the cessation of hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh. The document, among other things, provides for the introduction of Russian peacekeepers into the region, the exchange of prisoners between the parties to the conflict, the transfer by Armenia to Azerbaijan of a number of regions of the region and the return of refugees to Karabakh.
