In the quarter-finals of the cup against Austria Klagenfurt, the Upper Austrians prevailed 2-0 (0-0) at home on Friday and are thus, like the WAC, among the top four of the competition. Julian Wießmeier (50th penalty) and Leo Mikic ensured a deserved success in front of 1,150 spectators and made it into the semifinals for the first time in nine years.
The dream of a third cup win after 1998 and 2011 lives on for the sixth-placed Bundesliga player. Coach Peter Pacult’s Klagenfurt, on the other hand, who are only one point ahead of Rieder in fourth place in the championship, can now fully focus on the fight for entry dedicate to the master group.
For half an hour there wasn’t much going on in the Rieder Arena, only then could the hosts in particular put themselves in the limelight. A blocked attempt by Wießmeier (31′), shots by Ante Bajic over the goal (32′) and just wide (36′) and a long-range shot by Marcel Ziegl (33′) parried by goalie Phillip Menzel were the hallmarks of Rieder.
After the change of sides, Ried not only sniffed the lead, this time it also succeeded. After a handball from veteran Markus Pink in the penalty area and the subsequent VAR studies, Wießmeier made it 1-0 with a well-placed penalty. Klagenfurt did more for the game, a Ried defender had to scrape the ball off the line when Nicolas Wimmer headed the ball (54′).
Otherwise, the hosts didn’t allow much and became dangerous themselves, for example through Marcel Canadi (63’/Wimmer blocked at the last second). In the last 20 minutes, Ibertsberger also brought on more offensively oriented forces with the new Salzburg loanees Dorgeles Nene and Mikic. The latter danced out two defensive players and Menzel after a nice ball acceptance and made the preliminary decision perfect.
