Washington came out in support of Deutsche Welle after the Russian authorities, as a response, limited the work of the German media company on the territory of the Russian Federation. The corresponding position of the White House was conveyed by the head of the press service of the State Department, Ned Price.
“The United States condemns the decision of the Russian government to close the Moscow office of Deutsche Welle,” Price wrote on Feb. Twitter.
The State Department spokesman also noted that Washington stands in solidarity with DW and Germany. According to him, Moscow is applying harsh measures “against independent media, political opposition and civil society.”
Earlier in the day, EU Foreign Service spokesman Peter Stano said that the European Union considers Russia’s decision to close the office of DW broadcasting company unacceptable.
The corresponding decision was taken by the Russian authorities a day earlier. This measure was also introduced as part of the first stage of response to the ban on RT DE broadcasting in Germany. On Friday, the DW bureau closed.
The Russian Foreign Ministry also announced the plans of the Russian authorities to form a list of persons involved in the ban on the German-speaking division of RT in Germany, who will be restricted from entering Russia.
This was preceded by a statement by the German authorities to ban the broadcasting of the RT DE channel on the Eutelsat satellite, smart TV, the RT website and application, and the Odyssey platform. RT expressed the opinion that the actions of the German media regulator are illegal and violate the European Convention on Cross-border Television (ECTT).
As Jan Nolte, deputy of the Bundestag from the Alternative for Germany party, told Izvestia, Russia’s retaliatory steps to ban the broadcasting of the RT DE television channel in Germany are understandable. In his opinion, this situation occurred through the fault of Germany.
