The authorities in Kiev should have adopted a more moderate rhetoric when it comes to German arms sales. This was announced on February 5 by the chairman of the Bundestag Defense Committee, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann.
“I perfectly understand that the nerves of the representatives of Ukraine are on edge, but I do not understand the constant verbal attacks from the Ukrainian side against us,” she said in an interview with the dpa agency.
According to him, the German government rejected Ukraine’s repeated demands for the supply of weapons, citing the fact that since 2014 Berlin has allocated € 2 billion to Kiev for the implementation of various civilian projects.
“In recent years, Germany has provided Ukraine with great assistance out of a sense of responsibility and friendship. Therefore, in the heat of the emotional struggle, Ukrainian representatives should not confuse their own and others. A little moderation would be appropriate, ”said Strack-Zimmerman.
Earlier, on January 31, Ukrainian Ambassador to Berlin Andriy Melnyk lamented that Michael Roth, head of the German Bundestag committee on foreign policy, did not agree to a personal meeting and discussion of the possibility of Germany supplying weapons to Ukraine. He also noted that until Roth agrees to communicate with him, he will learn about Ukraine’s position regarding the refusal to supply weapons from the German media.
Thus, Kiev has been asking Germany for several months for the supply of weapons to protect against an allegedly possible Russian invasion, including warships and anti-aircraft systems. At the same time, on January 26, it was reported that Berlin would provide Ukraine with 5,000 military helmets.
A few days earlier, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stressed that the German government does not support the export of weapons from Germany to Ukraine. He pointed out that Berlin is “very actively” working to achieve a de-escalation of the situation around Ukraine. At the same time, the United States, Great Britain, the Czech Republic and other Western countries provide military assistance to Kiev.
Melnik, in turn, urged Berlin to agree to the sale of weapons to Kiev and threatened with consequences for relations between the countries. According to him, Germany bears the same historical responsibility for Ukraine as for Israel.
