Turkish President Erdogan and wife Corona positive

He and his wife had experienced mild symptoms and had then tested positive for the virus, Erdogan said on Twitter on Saturday. “Fortunately, we only have a mild infection,” he added. The omicron variant had been detected in them.

He will continue his work from home, Erdogan added. He had received his third dose of vaccine in June last year. “God willing, we will shake off this infection together,” his wife Emine Erdogan said on Twitter.

After a positive corona test, seven days of self-isolation is mandatory in Turkey. If the test result is negative on the fifth day, it can be shortened.

Almost 90,000 deaths since the pandemic began

Around twelve million infections and almost 90,000 deaths have been counted in Turkey since the beginning of the corona pandemic. In the past few weeks, the number of infections has risen to more than 100,000 per day. Authorities attribute the sharp rise to the highly contagious omicron variant.

52.5 million of a total of 85 million Turks have been vaccinated twice against Corona, more than 25 million have already received their booster vaccination.
