The 48-year-old had worked on the machine together with his 59-year-old wife – both from Kazakhstan. During a break, the man opened the protective cover to work on the cutting blades.
His wife, who was standing to one side of him, did not notice and switched on the engine to continue working. This pulled the man’s right hand into the rotating blades and severed his forearm.
Safety bolt had broken off
The rescue helicopter brought the injured after the first aid by the emergency doctor to the accident hospital in Salzburg, the police said. The woman went into shock. A technical check of the saw revealed that a safety bolt, which is supposed to prevent the power supply when the protective cover is open, had broken off.
