Rescue operation in Morocco: Five-year-old boy is still stuck in a well

The boy is supposed to be alive and will be brought out into the daylight in the next few hours. Medical workers are currently attending to the boy and checking his health, reports Gulf News.

Local media had previously reported that a rock blocked the way to the boy and would have delayed the work for several hours. In the evening, the helpers would have had to interrupt the rescue operation because of a landslide.

Rayan fell into an unsecured well near his home in a village about 150 kilometers north of the city of Fes on Tuesday afternoon. Because of the small width, the child could not be retrieved through the well itself. Rescue workers therefore removed earth parallel to the shaft with heavy equipment.

The rescuers also lowered a camera to check the boy’s health, hoses supplied him with water and oxygen. Current information as to whether Rayan is still alive was initially not available on Saturday. People around the world are following the rescue operation on social media. Despite the cold, thousands of onlookers gathered near the scene of the accident.
