61-year-old died in an avalanche in Berchtesgadener Land

A man from Austria (61) died in an avalanche in Berchtesgadener Land in Bavaria. A second Austrian (41) came to a clinic with serious injuries, the police said on Saturday. On Saturday afternoon, the ski tourers were near Ramsau near Berchtesgaden on the ascent via the Sittersbachtal to the 2,468 meter high Steintalhörndl. About 150 meters from the summit, a massive slab of snow broke loose and swept the two of them away.

A witness was able to locate and partially dig up the 61-year-old before the rescue workers arrived. In the avalanche field, however, only the death of the man could be determined. The avalanche had a starting width of about 400 meters, a length of about 870 meters with a height difference of about 320 meters.

On Saturday there was considerable danger with avalanche warning level three (out of five).
