They are still a mystery to the researchers, the so -called earthfalls. Were the cave systems hidden, cultivated or served as a storage room? One of the best preserved earth stalls in Upper Austria is located under a meadow in Unterstetten in the municipality of Tollet. He is more than 800 years old and has a total length of 37 meters. It is only accessible for a few chosen ones, as for the stall researcher and expert Josef Weichenberger. It is also not entirely harmless: sufficient oxygen supply must be ensured before starting. The connection shafts, the “slip tubes”, which lead to a total of seven chambers, only have a diameter of around 40 centimeters. In any case, you shouldn’t have space.
Researchers from the University of Applied Sciences OÖ on the Wels campus, Kurt Niel and Raimund Edlinger, are hoping for new knowledge by means of a 3D mapping. A separate club, “Upper Austria Earthstall Center Tollet Unterstetten”, wants to “make the underground above ground visible” and make the cultural heritage better known.
