A week ago the number was 27,127, the week before 22,453 cases. A new record was also set for active cases. 348,884 people are currently suffering from an infection, 5,551 more than the day before.
According to figures from the Ministry of Health and the Interior, the number of new infections of over 29,000 was below the average of 32,680 cases over the past seven days. The seven-day incidence increased slightly to 2,560.9 cases per 100,000 population. The Covid forecast consortium assumed that the preliminary peak in the omicron wave was reached in the past week. However, the uncertainty factor is still the omicron subtype BA.2, which is currently spreading in Austria. However, if the number of new infections falls soon and this trend continues, the national crisis coordination Gecko has recommended “embedding Covid-19 in the classic influenza surveillance structures” from autumn. However, Gecko called for flexible framework conditions on the part of the legislature “that make it possible to react quickly and without administrative hurdles to any changes that may arise”.
According to Gecko, reports on the situation in hospitals – also internationally – are heterogeneous. “While there are reports of relaxation in many places, the situation in other countries is tense, which is partly due to the increasing number of staff shortages,” reported the crisis coordination. This is also evident in Austria. The number of corona patients is currently increasing. According to ministry figures, there are currently 1,896 people with an infection in the hospital, 13 more than the day before. 201 people need intensive medical care. Since Saturday there has also been an increase of three and within a week of 24 patients.
There have been 18 deaths since Saturday, with a seven-day average of 20.1 per day. 141 deaths have been recorded in the past seven days. In total, the Covid 19 pandemic has claimed 14,232 lives in Austria since it broke out.
Despite the semester break, the number of tests is still high. In the past 24 hours, 651,058 rapid PCR and antigen tests were registered, most of which, namely 559,882, were meaningful PCR tests. The positive rate of the PCR tests is currently 5.2 percent. Most new infections were reported in Upper Austria with 5,773 new cases, followed by Vienna with 5,425, Lower Austria with 4,442, Styria with 4,105, Carinthia with 3,231, Tyrol with 2,471, Salzburg with 1,940, in Vorarlberg with 1,278 and in Burgenland with 659 new cases. The federal state with the highest seven-day incidence is currently Tyrol with 3,006.6, followed by Vorarlberg, Upper Austria and Styria (2,809.4, 2,692.1 and 2,660.2 respectively). Salzburg (2,608.1), Vienna (2,555.9), Carinthia (2,513.7), Lower Austria (2,220.9) and Burgenland (1,976.3) follow.
19,055 vaccinations were carried out on Saturday. 1,198 were first stitches, 3,570 second stitches and 14,287 third stitches. According to the data from the e-vaccination card, a total of 6,767,451 people received at least one vaccination. 6,186,312 people and thus 69.3 percent of Austrians have valid vaccination protection. 4,555,866 or 51 percent have already gotten the booster.
The protection rate (valid vaccination certificate) is highest in Burgenland at 75.4 percent. In Lower Austria 71.3 percent of the population have a valid vaccination protection, in Styria 70.3 percent. After Vienna (68.2), Tyrol (67.7), Carinthia (66), Salzburg (65.7) and Upper Austria (65), Vorarlberg brings up the rear with 65 percent. Since the beginning of the pandemic there have already been 2,056,928 confirmed cases in Austria. 1,693,812 people have recovered from an infection.
