The AFO Architecture Forum Upper Austria in Linz is expanding with its new series “And what do you do?” the horizon beyond mere architectural questions. The guests of the series are invited to talk about current aspects and problems and to present them in relation to their work. The first guest was the internationally renowned civil engineer and architect Werner Sobek on February 27th. Afterwards there was the opportunity to interview.

Oönachrichten: Building is the production of home for you. How is this to be understood?

Werner Sobek: This idea goes back to the philosopher Ernst Bloch and his work “The principle of hope”. For me, building home is more than the creation of living space. It is about creating a – perhaps also inner – place where you like to be where you feel good. You can even carry this form of home with you, as I do because I am traveling a lot and could never afford homesickness. Others need a concrete place with all its meanings and memories.

You are working on a comprehensive trilogy about building the future, Von which the first two volumes have already been published. Why do you do this?

The first volume deals in comprehensive analyzes and fact -based with our presence against the background of climate change. It is a global description of the condition of aspects of migration, the global harvest developments et cetera. After his appearance, the question of solution perspectives immediately arose. Can we do something else or do we drive against the wall fatalistically? For many things that would be necessary, it is already too late. Volume 2. The third volume will show practical methods and possibilities that allow us to live satisfied in the future. This in harmony with nature.
