The removal of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson from his post by members of the Conservative Party is “inevitable”. This opinion was expressed by The Guardian on February 6, party member Charles Walker.
“It will inevitably end up with him leaving, so I just want him to have some leeway in that,” he said.
Wimbledon Conservative MP Stephen Hammond also said that for Johnson, the current situation “certainly looks like the beginning of the end.”
According to the publication, more than 15 Conservative MPs have publicly called on Johnson to step down.
On February 5, Johnson announced new appointments to the premier’s office following a string of resignations this week. The sweeping changes stem from the aftermath of the party scandal that regularly took place on Downing Street during the period of strict coronavirus restrictions.
Earlier, on January 31, the British Prime Minister refused to resign after publishing a report on the parties that were held during the lockdown at the government residence.
On January 16, the UK launched an investigation into activities at 10 Downing Street during the lockdown in May 2020. If the investigation reveals signs of potentially criminal conduct, the case will be referred to the London police, who refused to investigate Johnson’s participation in so-called wine parties on January 14.
Two days earlier, the tabloid The Mirror reported that “wine parties” during the lockdown were held at the residence on Downing Street in London on a regular basis. The Prime Minister visited them and urged the staff of the residence to “let off steam” on them.
On January 12, former UK Home Secretary Norman Baker, in an interview with RT, predicted the possibility of Johnson’s resignation from the post of prime minister by the end of March amid a scandal with his participation in parties during the lockdown. The opposition and leaders of the Liberal Democrats, as well as the Scottish National Party, called for his resignation.
