The situation in the center of Ottawa amid the ongoing protests of truckers got out of hand. This was announced on February 6 by the mayor of the capital of Canada, Jim Watson, in an interview with CTV News.
According to him, the protesters “run everything”.
“They have a lot more people than us police officers, and I pointed out to the chief that we need to be much more flexible and proactive when it comes to these actions,” he said.
Watson spoke about a structure that protesters put up in Confederation Park in downtown Ottawa. There they prepare food and gather to coordinate activities.
Ottawa police are investigating 50 incidents related to a long protest against COVID-19 restrictions in downtown. Four people have already been charged.
On February 3, the Ottawa police requested and received reinforcements from the Canadian Federal Police and departments from other regions to confront the protesters. On February 1, Ottawa police chief Peter Sloli said law enforcement officers are considering all options for ending a trucker protest in the Canadian capital.
The so-called “Freedom Convoy” entered Ottawa over the weekend. The number of protesters has increased. In total, there are about 500 trucks associated with the protest in the center of the Canadian capital.
