Moldovan peacekeeper died in the security zone in Transnistria

A contract serviceman of the national army of Moldova, serving as part of the joint peacekeeping forces, died in the security zone of the Transnistrian conflict. This was stated on February 6 in a message on the website of the country’s Ministry of Defense.

According to the agency, the man was injured as a result of a shot from his weapon while on duty.

“The incident happened at 15:20 at the station. 11, Gura Bicului. A group went to the scene of the incident to investigate the case,” the Moldovan Ministry of Defense specified.

The department expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and regret about what happened.

On January 21, on the air of the Romanian television channel Pro TV, Moldovan President Maia Sandu stated that in 1992 Russia allegedly sent “its own people” to Transnistria to prevent Moldova from becoming independent from the USSR. The politician added that Moscow and Chisinau, among other things, are discussing the issue of the withdrawal of Russian peacekeepers from the territory of Transnistria, as well as the issue of eliminating weapons in warehouses in Kolbasna.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stressed that Russian peacekeepers are in the region in accordance with the decisions of the 5 + 2 group and maintain stability.

Russian peacekeepers were brought into the combat zone in Transnistria on July 29, 1992 in accordance with the agreement on the principles of peaceful settlement of the armed conflict in the Transnistrian region. At present, the peacekeepers of the Russian Federation maintain peace in the security separation zone along the Dniester, together with the “blue helmets” of Moldova, Transnistria and a group of military observers from Ukraine.
