New Leondinger mobility concept gives preference to pedestrians and cyclists

In the future, it should be “slowed down”, so many traffic calming measures are planned. The present concept was developed by the city together with the Graz planning office “Planum Fallast Tischler & Partner GmbH” in a process that lasted more than a year and included citizen participation.

Mobility Councilor Armin Brunner (SP) emphasizes that there is now a clear prioritization of which road users should be promoted. “The guideline shows where the focus must be. And that’s not in car traffic, but in soft forms of mobility such as walking or cycling.”

Implementation of the concept will begin this year, and according to Brunner, “several million euros” will be invested each year. In the OÖN interview, he outlines the planned measures using a few specific examples.

The first of these is Ehrenfellner Straße at the Harter Plateau. It is planned to narrow the roadway here, and the road space that is freed up as a result is to be adapted or planted for pedestrians and cyclists. In addition, the pedestrian crossings are to be redesigned and thus made safer. “Our goal is also that the speed here is reduced to 30 km/h,” says Brunner. But this requires the approval of the district authority.

No passage for cars

Another point is pushing back the through traffic from the settlement areas, the roads there are supposed to lose their “attractiveness”. In practice, this means that lane narrowings are being considered in Gaumbergstrasse, for example. In Herderstrasse and Parkstrasse, on the other hand, a different approach is to be pursued: Only cyclists should be able to drive through here, and there will also be adequate facilities for pedestrians. However, cars should only be able to drive in sections, they are prevented from driving on the road continuously by fixed blocking elements. “In Herderstrasse, through traffic is around 30 percent, so because drivers cannot drive from one section to the next, they have to switch to the B139,” says Brunner.

It is now planned to examine how the traffic flows would change as a result of the closures. Addendum: “Something like this has to be developed together with the citizens, it has a massive impact on their mobility behavior.”

Other items on the agenda: Lane crossings in Haidfeldstrasse, new safety crossings (e.g. in Poststrasse) and a cycle path from Leonding to Linz along Ruflinger Strasse. The latter is to be developed jointly with the state.

A note for those interested: The concept will be presented on February 10th at 6 p.m. in the Doppl:Punkt. Registrations are possible under 0732/68780. (jp)
