In its amendment to the Environmental Promotion Act, the federal government is taking up an idea from Upper Austria. The repair bonus, with which there are subsidies for the repair of broken electrical household appliances, is to be introduced nationwide.
The government bill entitled “Funding for the repair of electrical and electronic household appliances” includes grants of 130 million euros between 2022 and 2025. During this period, the federal government expects 858,000 eligible repairs and a resulting waste saving of around 5000 tons.
Provincial Governor Thomas Stelzer (VP) is pleased that the Upper Austrian model has now been taken up in Vienna: “With the repair bonus, we set new standards in Upper Austria in 2018, which are now also recognized by the federal government.”
Upper Austria is to become a “model region for circular economy”. In addition to benefiting the environment, this should create new jobs. According to a study, up to 4,000 new jobs and 650 million euros in additional value could be created in Upper Austria in the coming years by promoting the circular economy.
Leading location Upper Austria
Upper Austria is already the nationwide leader in the field of environmental technology. According to the state, 23 percent of the Austrian environmental technology industry is located in Upper Austria. These companies mainly produce for export. 72 percent of all goods manufactured in this area are sold abroad.
