During the corona pandemic, cases of domestic violence increased year by year: According to the Vöcklabruck district authority, there were 92 evictions and bans on entry after violence in families in 2019; the following year there were 119 cases and in the previous year even 141.
This development is also confirmed by the women’s shelter in Vöcklabruck. 27 women and 17 children found shelter there last year. In addition, almost 300 outpatient consultations were recorded.
17 complaints were made by clients after domestic violence. “This is a big step for many of those affected, since the perpetrators are often very good at presenting themselves. They convey the illusion of a kind person with integrity to those around them, and so the women are often afraid that they will not be believed,” says Gudrun Steiner , chairwoman of the association “Frauenhaus Vöcklabruck” shares her practical experiences.
But there is also a sense of achievement for the multi-professional team at the women’s shelter: only two out of 27 clients returned to the person who was dangerous last year.
Chairwoman Steiner appeals to all threatened wives, life partners, mothers and daughters: “There are ways out of violence and we will support you!” The Vöcklabruck women’s shelter offers immediate protection through accommodation in the women’s shelter and support for all further steps. Of course, there is also anonymous advice. Mothers with children who come to the women’s shelter are supported by a teacher.
