At least 20 people died according to the latest official information on Monday. Thousands of houses are under water or completely destroyed, and at least 55,000 people have been temporarily made homeless. In aerial photos published by Welthungerhilfe from the southwest of the island, entire towns and many fields were under water. Some bridges and road links were disrupted.
“Batsirai” had hit the island on Sunday night. Aid organizations fear lasting damage, as the people there are still suffering from the devastating damage of a previous hurricane. The Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) sent the first assistants to determine the damage. The tropical storm came from the island of Mauritius, where at least one person died. Southern Africa is currently in cyclone season which can bring severe storms and precipitation through March or April. Just two weeks ago, tropical storm “Ana” devastated the states of Madagascar, Mozambique, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Zambia.
