Clean the window, wash curtains, dust out, muck out: a thorough spring cleaning is announced in many households. However, this is not harmless: in Austria after accidents during cleaning work in the household in the hospital, around 4,000 of them in spring cleaning, as reported by the Curatorium for Road Safety (KFV). According to KFV, this is the second highest value of the past nine years, only more injuries were recorded in 2023. 68 percent of the injured were women. There were 4700 accidents in Upper Austria last year.
80 percent of the accident in Austria had to be treated outpatient, 20 percent in hospital. 64 percent of the accidents spent falls, 16 percent on clashes with objects, twelve percent on scratching, cutting, stinging and biting.
“In 49 percent of all cases, distraction, hustle and bustle are the cause of the accident,” says Johanna Trauner-Karner, head of the sports and leisure security department in the KFV. For example, the falls of ladders or slipping on the wet floor often lead to injuries. Trauner-Karner advises you to take enough time while cleaning, prepare yourself well and to clear obstacles. Sometimes dogs or cats also become a stumbling block, for example when they run through the legs or convert brooms and cleaning buckets. Pets should ideally stay in a different room while cleaning.
