This project will shape the face of the provincial capital: the Linz regional light rail will expand the Upper Austrian S-Bahn network by two additional lines. The aim of the Stadtbahn is to reduce car traffic in the state capital. The Stadtbahn is intended to convince as many commuters as possible to switch from cars to public transport.
“This project is of cross-generational importance,” says Transport Councilor Günther Steinkellner (FP). The Linz Stadtbahn is the largest expansion project for public transport in Upper Austria in recent decades – and is divided into two parts. On the one hand, the Mühlkreisbahn coming from Rohrbach is to be connected to Linz Hauptbahnhof via the New Danube Bridge. On the other hand, a branch is to branch off north of the Danube and be extended to Pregarten. This creates two new rapid transit lines (S6 and S7). The entire project will cost around 540 million euros.
Eight million euros of this will go to the consortium “Team Stadtbahn Linz” for the planning work on the first part of the project. The consortium of ILF Consulting Austria GmbH, Schimetta Consult ZT GmbH and several subcontractors prevailed in the award procedure. The planning for the preliminary project of the first section from the Linz main station to the Kepler Klinikum and from there to the Mühlkreis station should begin immediately. According to the country’s transport department, construction work on the first section of the line could begin in 2026 if the current schedule sticks.
