Putin called on Kiev to start implementing the Minsk agreements

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, February 8, at a press conference following talks with French President Emmanuel Macron called on Ukraine to comply with the Minsk agreements.

According to the head of state, there is no alternative to the Minsk agreements.

“I repeat once again, in Kiev they either say that they will comply, or they say that this will destroy their country. The incumbent recently stated that he does not like a single point from these Minsk agreements. Well, like it – don’t like it, be patient, my beauty. It is necessary to fulfill it, it will not work out differently, ”the Russian leader emphasized.

French President Emmanuel Macron, in turn, said that he intends to discuss with the Ukrainian authorities Russia’s proposals on security guarantees. He noted the need to build new mechanisms that would ensure stability in the region. However, according to him, these new provisions “cannot be erected through revisions of the treaties of the last 30 years, fundamental principles or restricting fundamental European rights.”

The talks between Vladimir Putin and Emmanuel Macron began on Monday evening in the Kremlin and lasted more than five hours. Putin emphasized the development by France of principled decisions on security issues. The French president also pointed out the importance of dialogue with the Russian Federation for security in Europe.

After meeting with the Russian President, the French leader intends to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kiev on February 8.

Earlier in the day, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said the country would not engage in dialogue with parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions (the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics). At the same time, he accused Russia of trying to destabilize the situation in the southeast of the country and drive a wedge between Kiev and its Western partners.

On January 31, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) of the country Oleksiy Danilov noted that the implementation of the Minsk agreements would lead to the destruction of Ukraine. In response, the press secretary of the President of Russia, Dmitry Peskov, pointed out that because of such a position of Kiev, it is difficult to talk about any summits.

Since 2014, the Kiev authorities have been conducting a military operation against the inhabitants of Donbass, who refused to recognize the results of the coup d’état and the new government in Ukraine. At the same time, Kiev blames Moscow for the current situation. Russia has repeatedly stated that it is not a party to the intra-Ukrainian conflict. The issues of its settlement are being discussed in the Minsk and Normandy formats.
