After three defeats at the start of the 2010 semi -final series between the Vienna Captials and the Black Wings, the Linz were 0: 3 before the fourth game and stood with their backs to the wall. For the first time in the history of the domestic ice hockey league, the Linzers succeeded in what no one had thought possible: they won four times in a row and still moved to the final. This series was later to go into the league history under the terms “Re-Sweep series”, “Wunder von Linz” or “Wonder of Vienna”. Even in the NHL, this has only happened four times to date. There are also series in Finland, Switzerland and Slovakia in which this hussar piece has succeeded.
After somewhat surprising success in games 4 and 5, the Black Wings in game 6 had the opportunity to force a crucial game 7 in front of their own audience. A sold -out hall, the best atmosphere and a dream start into the game brought things going. Gregor Baumgartner scored 1-0 after 35 seconds, in the 6th minute it fell 2-0 by a Viennese own goal. But the capital were not beaten – on the contrary: Lemieux and Gratton equalized in the first third.
From the archive – that was the OÖN article on game 6 back then:
In the second section, the susceptible Vienna goalkeeper Cassivi was not able to fend off the disc on a Matthiasson shot-she rolled into the goal for 3: 2. But the guests replied again with a double strike. After two goals from Rafael Rotter, the Viennese took the lead for the first time in the 37th minute in this game.
At the beginning of the final third, Markus Matthiasson quickly equalized, but ofner brought the capital back to the front. And so it took up to 48 seconds before the final siren until Linz found a suitable answer. Pat Leahy banged a slice into the mesh and redeemed the fearful fans in the ranks. In the following overtime, Brad Purdie, after a good two minutes, to the hero of the game: The Canadian sank a penalty for 6: 5 victory.
