At Hartkirchen, the flat Eferdinger basin ends and gradually merges into the hill region of the upper Danube valley. With the Ruin Schaunburg, one of the striking viewpoints about the flat country around Eferding stands there. Down there, near Pupping, there was a prisoner of war in World War II with up to 30,000 imprisoned. 6000 people, predominantly Serbs, died here. Also in World War II there was still a camp where the 1000 Russians died. Of the once 450 barracks, one has been preserved to this day. The still little -known memorial at the camp cemetery in Deinham is reminiscent of these terrible times.

Varied round
We connected to the Schaunburg on a varied round of Deinham. From the Gstöttenau bus stop, follow the road towards Brandstatt until you reach a bridge over the Aschach. Here you can make a detour to the Danube. But we first followed the road, then an economic path south of the river to another bridge. From there, signposts show the way to Deinham. The camp cemetery can be reached through a settlement. It is a silent, shady park with simple stone crosses, plaques with names of Italian prisoners and three cenoteems for the Serbs, Italians and Russians who had died here.
