The White House administration is in contact with European partners in the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO), including on the issue of sending additional troops to Europe, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said on briefing on Monday, February 7th.
“We are in constant contact not only with the Pentagon, but also with our NATO partners regarding their defense needs. We leave open the possibility for such a move,” she said.
At the same time, Psaki noted that the administration is not ready to make any statements about sending additional US military forces to Europe.
Earlier, on February 6, US President Joe Biden avoided a direct answer to the question of the possibility of sending additional US military units to Europe. His only reaction was a raised fist in support of the American military sent earlier to Poland to strengthen the eastern flank of NATO.
On February 2, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby announced the upcoming transfer of additional US forces to Romania, Poland and Germany. As the media specified, it is planned to send about 2 thousand troops to Poland and several thousand more in the direction of the southeastern flank of NATO. At the same time, it was reported that in parallel with the United States, several other NATO countries, including Great Britain, France, Spain, Denmark and the Netherlands, decided to send troops to strengthen the eastern flank of the alliance.
Prior to that, on January 24, the Pentagon put 8,500 troops on high alert in case NATO needed to step up its response forces in Europe. At the briefing, Jen Psaki said that the United States has always expressed its readiness to strengthen the eastern flank of NATO and officials have been discussing security issues for European partners for several weeks.
Moscow has repeatedly indicated concern over NATO’s advance towards Russia’s borders. Russian President Vladimir Putin said on February 1 that the United States and NATO, in their responses to Russian proposals for security guarantees, had ignored Moscow’s fundamental demands.
