Teenage duo goes to the song contest: “The coolest thing that can happen”

It is the first time since 1982 that Austria has sent a man-woman duo to the ESC. The 19-year-old from Mühlviertel and the 18-year-old from Tyrol will start with the dance-pop number “Halo” and fight on May 10th for a place in the grand finale on May 14th.

the song itself remains secret. It should not be presented until March. Insiders describe “Halo” as “danceable DJ track with early 90s flair”.

By the way: The young Rohrbacher is familiar with the ESC location in Turin, as the son of an Italian mother lived in the Fiat city for some time. When LUM!X, Luca Michlmayr is an established name in the international DJ scene. For the single “Monster” alone, he can refer to more than 90 million YouTube views. Overall, LUM!X has already broken the 500 million stream mark.

A real newcomer is singer Pia Maria. The trained make-up artist has been writing her own songs since she was 16 and will now have her first major international appearance alongside LUM!X.

“The image of the farmer in lederhosen is no longer correct”

What OÖN readers have known since yesterday was revealed on Tuesday morning officially announced in the Ö3 alarm clock. The APA spoke to Austria’s ESC duo about the coolness of the competition, the adrenaline level and the question of why lederhosen are just a cliché.

They are 18 and 19 years old and will perform in front of around 200 million people in a few weeks. To start with, the sports reporter’s question: how do you feel about it?

Pia Maria: We definitely have a lot of adrenaline in our bodies now. But that’s exactly what makes it so! It’s also about this kick: You are now challenged and have to prove yourself. That gives me a lot. It’s important that we can say afterwards: we gave it our all and pulled it through, no matter what came out of it in the end. We stood up there and let the sow out!

LUM!X: I also became an artist because I like to entertain and perform. Of course, the idea of being on the biggest stage in Europe is daunting at first, but it is a chance to have a unique experience in an artist’s life. So for me, confidence dominates rather than fear!

The ESC will now be your first joint project. When did you first meet?

Pia Maria: I first recorded “Halo” by myself in an external recording studio during the course of the production and Luca produced everything. We only got to know each other during the video shoot. But it was a good fit right from the start, and we hit it off right away!

LUM!X: The whole thing was also due to Corona. We just sent the audio track back and forth instead of having a session together in the studio. But we then immediately noticed that we get along well, which is of course important if you are going to spend a lot of time together in the coming months.

Are you seeing the song contest for the first time this year or have you watched it before?

LUM!X: We’re both with that song competition grew up and partly also know the stories from the past like ABBA through our parents.

Is the ESC cool now? Or rather trashy?

LUM!X: Last year he got a breath of fresh air with Måneskin and aroused a whole new interest among the younger generation. It’s now the coolest thing that can happen to us! The fact that we are teenagers and still go there certainly contributes to the coolness factor! The more young there are, the more young it will appeal to.

Similar to Måneskin, you wouldn’t first think of Song Contest with your previous numbers. How far will you smooth your style for the ESC?

LUM!X: I would describe “Halo” as a dance-pop number. It’s a mixture of singing along and dancing – but also suitable for radio and not too aggressive. It is not produced purely for club reasons. But my fans will recognize me. I tried to create a mixture of pop and my signature sound. the song works in the club and on the radio.

And in Turin you will both be on stage?

LUM!X: Our aim is to continue the diversity that Måneskin started. We will therefore both be present on stage – we can reveal that much. Everyone song it has to be produced somehow, even if the focus is mostly on the singer. We turn it around and give the people who produce the song the big stage and present them on an equal footing with the singer.

Your mother is Italian – that means you’re practically performing in your second home country?

LUM!X: I grew up bilingual and emigrated to Italy after graduating from high school – to Turin to be exact! I lived there for six, seven months but have now moved to Milan. So the center of my life is in Italy. It’s in my blood and I feel really comfortable there. It couldn’t have worked out any better this year.

Do you still feel like the official representatives of Austria? How heavy is the load?

LUM!X: I grew up here, but we’re not typically Austrian. But that’s exactly what makes it so special. The image of the farmer in lederhosen is simply no longer correct. That’s why I think it’s cool that Austria comes and says: We’ll send two boys with a dance-popsong to the song competitionwhich goes against every Austrian cliché.

Are you ambitious?

LUM!X: We’re going there to win this! That’s already clear!

41 nations represented

After last year’s victory of the Italian rock band Måneskin, the competition is scheduled for the Italian industrial metropolis of Turin. Under normal conditions, 15,000 people are admitted to the Pala alpitour hall there – not counting the almost 200 million ESC television viewers throughout the competition.

This year, 41 nations are competing here with their artists. In addition to the Italian TV presenter Alessandro Cattelan, the two pop stars Mika and Laura Pausini act as moderators.

The Italian contribution: Singers Mahmood & Blanco have won the Sanremo traditional music festival and will represent hosts Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest in Turin in May.
