Prices for bakery products in Ukraine have become record high over the past five years, the reason was a sharp increase in gas tariffs for enterprises. This was reported on February 7 by the publication “Minfin”.
In February, 0.6 kg of bread in Ukrainian supermarkets costs 25.9 hryvnias ($0.9 or about 65 rubles). Rise in price for a month and sliced bread. Now for him (0.6 kg) in stores they ask for 25.5 hryvnia compared to 23.4 hryvnia in January.
Wheat bread in September cost 23.4 hryvnias, and in February it can be bought for 25.9 hryvnias.
In January, the price of rye bread in Ukrainian supermarkets was 30.6 hryvnia (almost $1.1) per 0.9 kg, and in February it rose to 31.5 hryvnia.
In mid-January, Ukrainian bakeries were on the verge of stopping production due to failure to comply with a Cabinet of Ministers decree on gas supplies at preferential prices.
The difficult situation in the industry is also reported in a letter from the All-Ukrainian Association of Bakers to President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal. The association asks to take measures to unblock the operation of the decree on preferential prices for blue fuel.
Bakers complain that they cannot buy gas at market prices, as this will lead to a further increase in the debt for raw materials and the termination of its supply, primarily flour. The association noted that the decision to supply them with gas at preferential prices is not carried out by suppliers for far-fetched reasons.
In December 2021, representatives of the Ukrainian dairy and grain industry warned of a possible cessation of production in their industries due to a catastrophic increase in gas prices to UAH 60 (more than $2 per 1 cubic meter since January).
At the same time, the newspaper Ekonomicheskaya Pravda reported that Ukrainian bakers would suffer losses due to the high cost of gas for business, which had grown almost tenfold in a year.
