On average, every Austrian eats 248 eggs annually, as can be seen from data from Statistics Austria. Demand is increasing around Easter. Around 60 million Easter eggs are eaten around the holidays in Austria. The situation is special this year: For weeks, as reported, the supermarkets have always come to bottlenecks in eggs. In some cases, individual forms of husbandry are out of print, sometimes entire shelves empty. This is also confirmed by the trade and justified with good demand and the impossibility of reacting to tips at short notice. “Nevertheless, the supply is ensured before and at Easter. We will have enough eggs,” says Rosemarie Ferstl. The Vice President of the Upper Austria Chamber of Agriculture informed on Tuesday at a press conference in Linz together with poultry speaker Martin Mayringer and Gerold Sterrer, the chairman of the poultry industry in Upper Austria, about the situation in the industry, the reasons for the irregular availability and the challenges for farmers.
