When renovating a Simmeringer sports field, a mass grave was encountered in autumn – from Roman times, as it turned out to be surprised by those involved. The hurry of around 150 men in a hurry point out violent fighting. Probably: the year 92 AD.
At that time, the Roman military camp Vindobona – where parts of the first municipal district can be found today – was not yet expanded to the size that can be seen on models in the Vienna Museum on Karlsplatz. Far from the gates of the base, which is considered the core of the later urban development, after excavation work, the renovation of the “Ostbahn-Xi” sports field in the Simmeringer Hasenleitengasse near the central cemetery opened up completely new perspectives on city history, explained Museum director Matti Bunzl and a number of experts.
